bullet Prepare Your Laptop For Your Trip

Whether you're a seasoned business traveller or occasionally commute by public transport, you can make the most of your “down time” while you're travelling. In this article we have provided tips for how to stay productive during your trip, and some of the things you need to consider before leaving your office or home.

What will I need to pack?
Packing varies considerably depending on the length and purpose of your trip. Use the following as a check list for some suggested items you should take with you.

Essential Items:

Padded carrying case: Offers physical protection for your laptop while travelling. Don't use a laptop bag – this is an obvious target for thieves.
Ethernet cable: In case this is not provided in your hotel room it's wise to have a backup.
Power cable: Most batteries have a limit of three hours or less so it's a must to have this for any work away from the office.
Wireless card: If your laptop isn't wireless-enabled you will need this for use with wireless hotspots or networks.

Essential Items for International Travel:
Power plug adaptor: Most laptops have universal power supplies that will work in most destinations, but you still need to bring the correct adaptor for the country or countries that you are visiting.
Telephone cord and adaptor: You will need this if you plan to use a dial-up connection and a modem. When you are ready to connect in your destination country, remove the foreign phone plug from its wall socket, insert the adaptor in it's place, then snap the RJ-11 plug from your modem into your adaptor.
Phone line filter: This is a small device that plugs into the phone line between the wall and your modem. Some countries use tax impulses on the phone lines to monitor local phone usage and assign charges. The pulses may prevent you from establishing a successful connection. Countries where you may encounter tax impulses are Austria, Belgium , Germany , Switzerland and Spain .
Nice-To-Have Items:
Headset: Useful for watching a movie or listening to music.
Extra Battery : If you are going to be away from a power source for as long time you will need these.
Surge Protector: This is an electrical device inserted into a power line to protect your laptop from sudden fluctuations in current.
Account numbers and passwords for wireless hotspots: These need to be stored securely but be readily accessible. Try http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/ew/ewallet.htm.
Compact storage device (like a USB key): Flexible, portable and a great way to share information when on the move.
Compact mouse: When you're working for long hours on your laptop this can make life much easier.
Protect your files with passwords: As well as following Back2Go's Complete Mobile Data Protection Guide to protect your files you can further protect your files by password-protecting the files that you plan to work on while in a public place.
